Is that really a thing?!

That's what we thought when we heard it. It's a rare day when you hear that Massachusetts collected too much tax revenue dollars and there's a rule somewhere that they have to return it to the taxpayers, but that's what happened.

Here's what you need to know and what to expect

The state has begun issuing these refund checks and expects to complete them by December 15, 2022. If you direct deposited on your 2021 income tax return that is how you'll receive this refund, otherwise a check will be mailed. Checks will state "MASTAXRFD", if you see that, it's ok to cash the check.

The refund is computed as 14% of your 2021 Mass tax liability.

If your 2021 tax return hasn't been filed yet, you have until September 15, 2023 to file and be eligible for this refund. The refund will automatically be processed one month after you file your 2021 income tax return.
